High Cost Drugs and Emerging Gene Therapies

Approximately 86% of employers have a stop-loss claim in a given year, and prescription drugs can be a major contributor – or even sole driver – of such claims. Gene therapies, a new experimental treatment, also comes with a high price tag. An as these new therapies gain in popularity, our industry is also seeing the rise of million dollar-plus claims.
  • 22% of self-funded employer health plans experienced a $1M claim in 2019
  • 24% of employers had at least one member with over $1M in claims over the four-year period from 2016 to 2019
  • The number of members with claims $3M+ has doubled since 2016.

In this session, we’ll talk about the significance and costs associated with high-cost drugs and emerging gene therapies and how producers can recommend right-sized solutions for their clients.

Key Topics:

  • Top 20 high-cost injectable drugs
  • Gene therapies
  • Impact of high-cost drugs on multi-million-dollar claims

Delivering Intensive Care Management Services to Polychronic Patients

By some estimates, the number of Americans living with 3 or more chronic conditions will triple in the coming years, from 30.8 million in 2015 to 83.4 million in 2030.

  • >63.6% of Washingtonian adults report behaviors that can lead to chronic conditions
  • >57.2% of Washingtonians adults suffer from a chronic condition; 22.3% of these adults manage 2 or more conditions
  • >21.1k lives could be saved annually with better prevention and treatment options

Further, the economic impact of these disease burdens are substantial, as people living with 2 or more conditions (30% of the population) account for over 70% of annual healthcare spend in the US.

  • $56B is spent on healthcare in Washington, 75% ($42B) of this spend is on patients with multiple chronic conditions
  • Chronic disease results in an estimated $17B/year in lost employee productivity for Washington employers
  • Increasing chronic condition levels lead to increases in the cost of health insurance and disability coverage

In this session, we’ll share how Stealth Startup is leveraging digital-first services, data science, and brick-and-mortar provider partnerships to provide a better care experience for patients with multiple chronic conditions.
